Abstract
Objective: Peptic ulcer is the areas of mucosal ulceration exposed to acid peptic secretions. Though ulcers can occur at any level of alimentary tract but most common locations are the first part of duodenum followed by stomach. Objective of present study was to study anti ulcer effect of Eulophia herbacea Lindl tubers extract in rats. Material and methods: Ethanolic extract of Eulophia herbacea tubers was tested for anti ulcer effect in two doses 200 and 300mg/kg bw using ethanol induced ulcer in rats. Effect was observed by measurement of ulcer score, ulcer index, total acidity, gastric content and antioxidants level. Results and conclusion: The ulcer index of ethanol extract (300 mg/kg) treated group was showed 9.75±0.17 significantly reduced (p<0.01) as compared to control. A significant decrease in total acidity (280.41±11.62 mEq/litre) in ethanol extract treated group was observed. Significant improvement in level of SOD, CAT and GSH was found in treatment group of 300mg/kg dose of EEEH as well as standard drug treated group. Histopathology study of all the groups were supports antiulcer properties in different extents. Overall results of the study were concluded that ulcer protective effects of E. herbacea tubers extract could be due to the reduction of oxidative stress.
